Maybe money can’t buy love, but it can sure buy Mercy. Just ask Grammadonna, whose purchase of little Chifundo ‘Mercy’ James from Malawi was approved today by the country’s highest court. Madonna’s earlier bid for the three-year-old was denied by a lower court which claimed she did not meet the necessary residency requirements.
Family of Mercy’s mother, who died in childbirth, have supported Madonna’s adoption bid, while James Kambewa, who claims to be Mercy’s father, says he wants to raise the child, although he hasn’t yet met her.
The courts ruled in Malawi’s best interest, noting Madonna’s charitable contributions to the southern African nation through her charity, Raising Malawi.
Madonna’s rep released a statement on her behalf regarding the court’s decision saying, “I am extremely grateful for the Supreme Court’s ruling on my application to adopt Mercy James. I am ecstatic … My family and I look forward to sharing our lives with her.”
As for Mercy, I’m sure she will do just fine.
