They’ve never met, but Mercy James‘ father says he wants to be the one to care for his daughter. Responding to Grammadonna’s attempts to adopt the four-year-old Malawi girl, James Kambewa tells CBS news, “I want to take care of her, and I’m capable to take care of my baby. Mercy, she is a Malawian — so (I) need her to grow as a Malawian as well with our culture.”
Although Madonna adopted David Banda from Malawi two years ago, earlier this year her request to adopt Mercy was denied on the grounds that she had not resided in the country for the required 18 to 24 months.
Madonna’s appeal of the ruling will be heard today in Malawi courts. Will blood win over money? Culture over couture? Meanwhile, Mercy still sits in an orphanage awaiting her destiny. Let’s hope she turns out to be the real winner in this battle.
